It was lovely to break bread with members of the Phyliss Court Aviators’ Circle in Henley and then sing for my supper as the evening’s after dinner speaker … they were a very engaging audience.
“ Having been involved in this period for all my life … I must say that this is the best account I have heard”
“You took me back to 1940!”
Interestingly, whilst at Phyliss Court, I was shown photographs taken in the same building that I was speaking in … except not 2024 but 1943. They show the scale models constructed there by craftsmen of V-Section RAF Medmenham for the purpose of briefing the Officers and Men of 617 Squadron from RAF Scampton, prior to the ‘Dambusters Raid’ that took place on the night of 16/17 May 1943, during which 53 aircrew failed to return.
My engagement with the Phyliss Court Aviators’ Circle continued, when two weeks later, I hosted a private tour for them at the Bunker at Uxbridge, which had been front and centre of the story I had previously shared with them in Henley. The consensus was that it was a great trip!
“Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better and I couldn’t be anymore absorbed … it did and I was.”
